Genealogy on a shoestring – my research so far

At present, I am researching the Chadfield family dating back to the 1600′s, I have found that from the 18oo’s back, the records become increasingly difficult to trace as the spellings and handwriting get considerably illedgable. To the point where the Chadfields have now been recorded as both Chadfield and Chatfield.

I have found it does make it difficult when you have nothing more to go on than just the church parish records. Once you have gone beyond the Census’s ie 1841 onwards it is mainly down to parish records and gravestone inscriptions.

I am attempting to do my genealogy without paying out overly excessive amounts to retrieve the information which I feel is rightfully mine to own in the first place!
Thank goodness for websites like -:
FREE BMD, http://www.freebmd.org.uk
FREE CEN,  http://www.freecen.org.uk/
FREE REG,  http://www.freereg.org.uk/

also the Church of the Latter Day Saints – https://www.familysearch.org
which I have found very helpful over the years as a free resource.

Genealogists should support these websites and by creating a website or webpage online instead of entering their family trees/details into the paid sites, (hence preventing fellow family members from accessing this information), unless paying through the nose, which could greatly benefit their family research.

Remember do not get caught out in the world of Genealogy and make sure your not paying for things that are available free!

    Hi Dion

Thankyou for getting in touch, it is good to hear from the NZ Chadfield’s again, I was hoping that someone would contact me. Sadly I lost contact my computer broke down and I lost all of the information including photographs of the family. I would be very grateful for any photo’s of the family as I do not have any of the NZ Chadfields and it would be ideal for the website, when I start expanding the tree.

I believe we are related as my Great Uncle George Harry Chadfield was living with his wife Emma Mabel and parents Henry and Mary in Turakina in 1919. I found this out via the Manawatu General Roll. As far as I can remember George and Emma moved to New Zealand due to having a baby, unfortunately I cannot remember the baby’s name!

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind Regards
    Sue Wilkinson (nee Chadfield).
